Homework 5

4D Project

Title:
Week Calendar

Concept:
I get inspiration from free hug campaign which includes giving and receiving from two stragers. Interaction is also about giving and receiving information. Back to my words -- self-healing and balance, I thought about making a product to let people help each other push through tough times. In this way, both of them are able to feel happy and relaxed.

How to use:
There are seven boxes and seven LEDs on the week calendar. This product can be used by roommates or couples. When someone feel depressed, other people are expected to do something to help him. Putting small gifts in each box to surprise your friend/mate before he/she goes out. When one of the boxes is opened, an led will be turned on. If all of the LEDs are turned on, it means you go through another week.

Homework 4

3D Project

Title:
From chaos to order

Concept:
I reconsidered the words 'healing'. It is interesting that if one need to heal himself, he must get injured or things get disordered. For example, someone feel depressed because he can't finish his work before deadline. Tidying up is one of the activities from which people get sense of comfort. I got inspiration from 'The art of order'(rearrange everything in a picture based on shape or color) and knitting art.In this project, I made 7 different knitting and ranged them from chaos to order.

Process:
I use two elements to measure the degree of chaos in this handmade book -- color and pattern. When people read this book, they are able to see the process of the knitting patterns get ordered.

Homework 3

2D Project

My words:
Self-healing; Balance

Concept:
In my last homework, I wrote a story about a girl named Kim who tried many ways to heal herself. So I decided to use design language to express the process of healing. The first one is healing paper. I get inspiration from paper-making technology. Ancient handicraftsman boil bamboo to get the fiber inside, and then they reshape the fiber to get a piece of paper. Another inspiration is from water, water can't be broken because its flexibility.

Homework 2

Ideas Inform

5 words:
healing, handcraft, sleep, sea, furry

My story:
For people who have chronic disease, the process of self-healing is important. Unfortunately, Kim has not found her way of self-healing yet. Kim has a disease called group activity phobia. She gets nervous and anxious every time she attend these large-scale activities. Although Kim tries her best to avoid, it is difficulty to live alone and have no contact with others.

Kim has a strange hobby. She like watching craftsmen thread a needle and sew something by their hands. Hand stitch really brings Kim a sense of comfort. When the needle works through the cloth or fur regularly, she feels like the whole world becoming quiet and all the voices disappear. Kim started to make her own handcrafts 2 weeks ago in order to heal herself.

She used to stare at her laptop for hours before sleep. The computer radiation makes her brain continue working even she lies down. Some embarrassing situations happened in social occasions many years ago appear in her mind. “Stop doing that!”. Kim talked to herself. Then she got up and made her handcraft for an hour. Most of the time, she just did the straight-line stitching and have no idea what she was going to make.

Kim has an ambitious goal, saving money to buy a house on the beach. This is not a way to escape from people or live in seclusion. She likes the sound of sea which reminds her of the comfort status in her mother’s womb. It is almost impossible for someone to remember the feeling of being a fetus. However, Kim firmly believes her memory.

LULU plays an important in her memory. LULU was a beautiful sausage dog with short furry hair and chestnut eyes. They went to the dog park nearby every week together. Back to 5 years ago, Kim was able to talk to strangers confidently without hesitation. And she liked group activity at that time, especially pet activities. In the midnight, Kim lies in bed and thinks about that maybe LULU’s death causes her group activity phobia. She gets up and continues her handcrafts. This time, Kim decided to make a plush toy for LULU.

Homework 1

5 in 5 (Day 1) Portrait

Concept:
One day, I was walking on the street. A girl who had slender legs caught my eyes because I am not satisfied with my legs since I was a little girl. I think my leags are too flabby. Then I realized that almost everyone gets something they are not satisfied with. My girlfriends always talk about plastic surgery for nose. So maybe sometimes it is better to accept our shortcomings than to hate ourselves because nobody is perfect.

Process:
People always try to hide their shortcomings when they take a selfie. So I asked some friends to send me selfies and tell me about which part of their body they don't like. And then, I would draw potraits for them. However, in these potraits, I didn't beautify them, I drew the parts of their body that they don't like and wrote something to encorage them instead.

Homework 1

5 in 5 (Day 2) Price of commodities

Concept:
I have been in New York for 1 month. If anyone asks me about my impression for New York, my answer is "expensive". 2 weeks ago, I spent 30 dollars to develop my roll films. However, in China, the price is only 10 dollars. So I am curious about the price of commodities in other cities. There is a website called NUMBEO that we are able to check the price of different countries/cities. But all kinds of index showed in the website make me confused. The official statistical data is not quite visualized.

Process:
I get a lot of friends studying abroad/travelling abroad right now. I asked them to take pictures of egg, milk and bread(with the prices) in local supermarket so that we can have a look at the price in a visualized way. I did some graphic desigh and data visualization to make this project more interesting.

Homework 1

5 in 5 (Day 3) High-frequency words in pop songs

Concept:
Last night, I came out of the new school building. When I was on the way to path station I heard the familar melody——Luis Fonsi's Despacito. Actually, I like this song and I have listened to Despacito for many times. However, I don't know the meaning of the lyrics. When I was in highschool, almost all of my classmates got a long list of English songs in their phones. But most of the time, we just listened and knew nothing about the lyrics. So I started to think about those lyrics. What is the main idea of pop songs? What is the difference between pop songs in different countries?

Process:
I downloaded the lyrics of TOP 10 songs in billboard, Official Charts and Fresh Asia(music charts). Then I used a tag clouds website to abstract the High-frequency words in pop songs. In this way, we are able to see the main idea and the different music culture in USA, UK and China.

Most of my generation have been watching American movie, TV series since a young age. And I’am a big fan of a lot of American TV series, such as BIG BANG THEORY, CASTLE, CSI and so on. There is a question bothering me every time I watch actors having Chinese food in American TV series —— Why are these Chinese takeout container all the same? A white box with a red pattern on it. So in this essay, I am going to start with something small and digging for more information behind the little Chinese food box.

Homework 1

5 in 5 (Day 5) Be a Google Street View photographer

Concept:
Today is Sunday. Usually, I go out and take photos in New York City on weekend to explore new surroundings. However, there are two reasons that I can't do it today. Firstly, my camera was broken last week. Besides, today is a rainy day. So I decided to explore the world in a different way that I am able to take photos without my camera and don't need to go out.

Process:
Google Street View sounds like a good idea to achieve my goal. There are plenty of pictures. Users are able to change the angle of all kinds of scenic spots. The only thing I need to do is using screenshot to take photos. After that, I edited these screenshots by lightroom to make them look better. I selected Greece, Japan and Kenya as my destination today. All the pictures below and left are took by screenshot on Google Street View.
